Education in Biblical Counselling

Whether you’re pursuing certification, a degree, or entry-level learning, here’s how to think about training in biblical counselling — and where to begin.

If you are looking for education in biblical counselling — certification, a degree program, or entry-level learning — the organizations and pathways below are a good place to start. These are not listed in any particular order of preference. We’d encourage you to investigate each and decide which best fits your particular needs.

Before You Begin

Things to Consider About Education

01

Are you looking for certification?

Several organizations certify biblical counsellors. Certification typically confirms your training, includes certifying exams, and requires a minimum number of (often supervised) counselling hours. Many certifying bodies also ask for proof of church membership and a reference from your pastor or an elder. Note that certification is separate from training and accreditation (such as earning a degree).

02

Are you considering a career in biblical counselling?

Most biblical counsellors who work full-time are either employed within a local church counselling ministry or have established their own practice. If you have a church or ministry in mind, it’s best to talk with them about completing your training as part of their ministry. If you don’t yet have a specific church or ministry in view, a recognized training or degree program is a strong starting point.
